High Density Gardening

High Density Gardening shows you how to grow fantastic tasting vegetables and salads in even the tiniest garden using highly productive raised beds filled with a superb soil mix.

Hotbox Compost Bin

I love using the system I have built to make compost. The hotbox composting system can be a very fast method of producing high quality compost in the summer months. The hotbox composting system works by helping the natural microbes which are present in your garden digest what you are adding to your compost box.

The natural microbes need somewhere safe to work, somewhere that is fairly warm and somewhere that is not too wet. There are more details on this in the Hotbox Compost Bin page.

Using this system, you should be able to make fairly good quality compost in as little as 8 weeks. You could use this in your high density garden straight away but I like to treat my compost like fine wine and mature it first. I do this by adding it to my cold compost bin which is full of composting worms and they help convert the fairly raw, but useable compost, into a much more crumbly and earthy smelling compost. I then sieve this using a small rotary sieve before adding to my high density garden whenever I add a new crop. I just dig this into the top 2 to 4 inches of the soil mix.
